2020 Fire and Ice Festival

The theme for the 3rd annual award-winning, week-end long festival, sponsored by the Quiet Resorts – Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce – was “Out of This World”. It is becoming an exciting tradition in Bethany Beach to have many local businesses display ice sculptures on the boardwalk and on the streets of Bethany Beach. There were also many family-oriented activities throughout the weekend. This year the sculptures and festivities expanded down route 26 through Ocean View and Millville.
Brian and Linda are looking forward to the fourth annual Fire and Ice Festival for January, 2021 and hope to see everyone there!

SM Spotlight St. Martha Catholic Church and School
Whether you’re looking for quality education for your child or a place for you and your family to worship, look no further than St. Martha Catholic Church and School in Louisville, Kentucky.
St. Martha Catholic Church and School was founded in 1961 to meet the needs of the community
after a lot of Catholics moved into the area in the 1950s and early 60s.
Today, St. Martha Catholic Church and School is a community of approximately 1,200 families.
The church is made up of parishioners who are dedicated to inspiring people to love, serve and know God and one another. It offers a daily mass service, as well as worship ministries, outreach and stewardship. It even offers faith formation which is religious education for people who either want to become Catholic or young people who don’t go to school at St. Martha’s but still want the Catholic education.
“The church supports the community at large. It’s people whose kids or grandkids have gone to the school before and also people who have never utilized the school before,” Jason Duckworth, operations manager for St. Martha Catholic Church and School, said.
The school offers high-quality education for children from preschool to eighth grade. Its teachings promote the gospel message of community and service to others based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Church.
It also offers various service clubs, academic teams, sports and other activities for students of all ages.
Although there are certainly other Catholic churches and schools in the area, St. Martha Catholic Church and School is dedicated to making itself stand out with not only its great services and programs, but also its strong sense of family.
“We have a very strong, tight community that has lasted through generations,” he said.
“We have people who have moved out of the neighborhood but actually come back to be part of our parish. They may drive past another Catholic church or school every day in order to be members here.”
Duckworth, who began working at St. Martha Catholic Church and School in June 2019, has strong ties to the community of St. Martha’s himself.
His wife has been a member since first grade, his grandfather was a deacon at the church in the 1990s and various members of his family have been parishioners over the past 30 years.
“So it just kind of seemed natural that somehow I was going to end up working here,” he said.
For him, his favorite thing is the people he gets to work with.
However, St. Martha Catholic Church and School isn’t without its challenges. The biggest challenge the church faces is keeping those of all age groups engaged and the biggest problem the school is currently facing is the same problem many other Catholic schools in the city are facing, keeping enrollment up.
Despite these challenges, St. Martha Catholic Church and School is still going strong and has high hopes for the future.
“We love who we are and we welcome others to take a look at our school and our church,” Duckworth said.
“We think most people will love it as much as we do.”
