The situations that Schooley Mitchell’s Greg Wisz has encountered can only be described as startling. One business had excessive services and was paying $120,000 too much each year. Another had been overbilled for long distance to the tune of $600,000.

It may be shocking, but it’s all in a day’s work for the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based consultant who routinely uncovers savings of 35 percent or more for his clients.

“Because of the number of clients we have, it’s easy to see that everyone is overcharged for telecommunications,” says Wisz, noting he’s found savings for virtually every client he has audited. “The problem is astronomically big.”

Being overcharged for services you don’t want or don’t need is a problem for all businesses no matter their size. Wisz knows that just because a company is large or has ample resources, does not mean its telecommunication costs are under control.

On the flip side, he has performed detailed analyses for small companies that never thought they would qualify for the competitive pricing offered to larger enterprises, only to have thousands shaved annually off their bills.

There are the people who approach their telecom with the “weigh it and pay it” method, meaning if the bill was about the same amount as the month prior, or even more, it is paid without hesitation. It’s surprising how many companies pay bills this way.

Sometimes the amount that can be saved is truly unbelievable. He still can’t believe one account he worked on where the client’s cell phone bill was reduced by 97 percent.

“Who would think they would be paying 97 percent too much?” he says.

Finding savings aside, his favorite part of his work is interacting with people. He prefers a hands-on approach with clients, and works hard to ensure they understand the services and options that are available and how it will impact their bottom line.

Wisz keeps an eye on industry trends, and suspects more businesses will migrate toward wireless data share plans.

Traditional landlines will continue to be ditched in exchange for VoIP offerings. Cloud-based solutions will continue to become more popular, leading to lower costs.

“You’re going to see a lot more interoperability amongst the communications systems,” he predicts. “It’s changing the way we work, the way we think, the way we do business.”

Outside of work, Wisz likes to stay active, downhill skiing, waterskiing and booting around on Segways. He’s also been a regular blood donor for over 35 years; something he knows is important as demand almost always exceeds supply.

After years of consulting and millions of dollars worth of found savings, if he could give business owners just one piece of advice, what would it be?

Stick to your strengths.

“Do what you do best and let us do what we do best,” he says. “Do what you’re good at and let us do what we’re good at: Handling the telecom.”
