Apple Perceptio Acquisition Could Make Siri Smarter Without Compromising Privacy

siri voiceApple has purchased artificial intelligence (AI) tech company Perceptio in a move that will help deliver more intelligent features to future devices. This acquisition will set iPhones apart from Google devices by limiting the amount of user information required to power smart features.

Google now and other automated features offered by Google require access to a large about of personal data in order to work. Perceptio’s AI, however, lets users “run advanced artificial intelligence systems on smartphones without needing to share as much user data.”

Perceptio has been developing image-recognition systems based on deep learning. Future iPhones and IPads will use this deep learning tech to identify and classify sensory input. According to Bloomberg, advanced AI image-classifications systems will be also be able to run on smartphones “without having to draw from large external repositories of data.”

While the particular uses of Perceptio’s tech have not been disclosed, Apple’s recent interest in improving its virtual assistant and other iOS features leads speculators to believe Siri and Photo apps are likely to benefit from this acquisition.
