John Campbell - Nova Scotia

After a career of almost 30 years in insurance I entered into a business relationship that ended poorly and left us with very little to show for our hard work.  I wanted a change and one of the opportunities that I considered was telecom consulting with Schooley Mitchell.

I was attracted to the concept of offering a service that didn't cost anything to the client until a decision was made to act on my recommendations.  Even then any amount paid out came from money we saved them.  I felt this non-threatening approach would work - and it has!

Nothing worthwhile doing happens overnight and it's the same with this business.  Usually there are friends and acquaintances who own businesses you can approach initially to get started.  This is what we did and the referrals from these initial contacts have become the key.  It took us close to a year to develop those contacts to the point where we started to develop business from them and the "snowball effect" has begun to develop where we are realizing the potential we recognized when we first investigated the opportunity.

Like anything else, it takes hard work and commitment to sticking with it even though it may look like no progress is being made.  But the best thing I have found is that the work is enjoyable!  The people I meet are at the top of their game, usually VP of Finance or similar positions, and they are always professional.  Since the concept is non-threatening they are always willing to listen even if they choose not to act at this time.

Even though my background is not in telecom I have not regarded this as a barrier.  I see my role as a facilitator for my clients.  I tell them that I may not have the solution but I know where to find it.  And that is where I have always received terrific support from head office.

I continue to regard this business as a huge opportunity.  I know that if I keep on doing the things I learned in training I will always have the tools to guarantee my financial future.  The icing on the cake is that I love what I am doing!  I recommend to anyone looking at the opportunity that if they commit to working hard with their head down for at least a year, they will like what they see when they finally look up.
